The Web Host Industry Week in Review

While this week's news was varied, its most significant revelations were both acquisitions, and the most widespread trend involved a series of announcements regarding current or upcoming industry events.

On Wednesday, Web hosting provider Endurance International reported that it had merged with Web hosting provider IPOWER to create the third largest Web hosting company in the United States. The deal closed last Friday, bringing more than 600,000 Web sites under management of the company. The two firms will continue to operate as separate brands while collaborating to capitalize on their strengths.

On Monday, social networking site MySpace reportedly reached a preliminary deal to acquire photo hosting site Photobucket for approximately $250 million in cash. The tentative agreement would seem to solve the dispute that had existed between the companies, with MySpace having only recently lifted a block on Photobucket images from its pages. Photobucket currently has more than 40 percent of the US online photo market and receives 17 million unique visitors per month.

While the week saw two major acquisitions related to hosting, the most significant trend in this week's news was the announcement of details related to upcoming events in the hosting business.

Networking giant Cisco announced last Friday that it would host a multi-city tour aimed at demonstrating the relevance of network-based architecture for next-generation data centers. The "Data Center Day" tour began May 8 in Indian IT hub Bengaluru. Topics discussed include networking, SAN building and adaptive IT infrastructure. The event will stop in Mumbai and and Delhi this month.

On Monday, Jupitermedia announced that it had released the conference program for ISPCON Spring 2007, which will focus on opportunities for Internet services firms to deliver managed services and hosted IT solutions to the small and medium-sized business sector. The company says SMBs represent an underserved, multi-billion-dollar market opportunity, which ISPCON attendees are uniquely positioned to serve. The conference will offer sessions on managed services, voice services, software as a service and Web services, messaging and collaboration, municipal wireless, open source, hosting, data centers and business issues.

On Wednesday, Web hosting platform provider cPanel announced that it would host its cPanel 2007 Training Seminar in Houston, Texas from May 30 to June 1. The seminar will feature presentations designed to help Web hosts, technical support representatives, server owners and other users to make the most of cPanel. With the release of cPanel and WHM 11, the company says it expects a lot of questions.

Also this week, theWHIR reported from the SWsoft Global Hosting Partner Summit in Reston, Virginia. The two-day event saw SWsoft deliver its message to customers, strengthening its relationship with partners and offering strategies for using automation and virtualization to enhance business models and deliver software as a service.
